How To Take Care Of Your Windshield Replacement

If you have sustained damage to your windshield, you might have made an appointment to have your windshield replaced at your home or place of work. If this is the case, you may be wondering what steps you need to take after the windshield is installed to ensure that it is properly taken care of and no immediate damage occurs to the new glass. While the auto glass can be installed within about an hour under normal circumstances, this does not mean that you will be able to drive away in your vehicle immediately after the installation is complete. Keep reading to learn what steps you should take after the windshield replacement has been completed to protect the new glass.

Avoid Driving for an Hour Following the Replacement

Once the new windshield has been installed, it is recommended that you avoid driving your vehicle for roughly an hour to ensure that the urethane has fully dried. The entire curing process can take a few hours, but it is still safe to drive your vehicle during this time. Ideally, though, you should wait as long as possible to take your vehicle out for a spin.

Don't Wash Your Vehicle for at Least 24 Hours

Regardless of how you normally wash your vehicle (yourself or an automatic car wash), washing your vehicle should be avoided for a minimum of 24 hours following the installation of a new windshield. While the water itself may not necessarily damage the seal, the high-pressured jets could cause the seal to be punctured, resulting in the need for repair.

Make Sure To Leave Your Windows Slightly Open for at Least 24 Hours

After your windshield has been successfully installed, you will want to ensure that you crack at least one of your windows. You will want to continue doing this for at least an entire day. The reason for this is because it will allow any air that builds up inside of the cabin of the vehicle to escape. If you don't do this, the air will simply build up inside and expand, placing pressure on the newly installed windshield.

Avoid Slamming Doors and Bumpy Roads

With a new windshield installed, you will want to avoid any kind of pressure changes if at all possible. Therefore, you should shut the doors as gently as possible, and you should take roads that you know do not have potholes or speed bumps. This should be done for the first few days after the installation.

These are just a few tips to help you ensure that your windshield adheres properly so that you don't have to have any unnecessary repairs performed following the replacement. For more information or to schedule your mobile replacement, contact a windshield replacement service in your area.
